Leif & GroLearn and grow, a little every day
The app is in Norwegian

This page is in English, but Leif & Gro itself is only available in Norwegian, and only in the Norwegian App Store. Reading, letters and rhymes are all practised in Norwegian.

A little practice every day before school starts

For children in the year before they start school. Gro explains, Leif practises alongside your child, and after the day’s practice your child waters their plant.

On iPhone and iPad, or on a printed sheet at the kitchen table.

Screenshot from the app (in Norwegian): Ella reads the word DUE (dove) and taps the matching picture, while Gro and Leif cheer at the bottom of the screen.

What a day looks like

The day’s practice takes about 10–15 minutes. When it’s done, your child waters their plant, and the plant grows one step.

  1. Screenshot: addition tasks, where two answers are correct and have earned a star. Gro says “Hei! Jeg heier på deg.” (“Hi! I’m cheering for you.”)

    Your child practises

Gro explains the tasks and says whether the answer is right. Leif practises alongside your child and cheers.

  2. Screenshot: “Du klarte alle oppgavene, Ella!” (“You did all the tasks, Ella!”) and a watering can above a pot with a small plant.

    Your child waters the plant

When the day’s tasks are all correct, your child drags the watering can over the pot.

  3. Screenshot: “Takk, Ella!” (“Thank you, Ella!”) and “Se, den vokser!” (“Look, it’s growing!”) above a plant that has grown.

    The plant grows

One step for each day your child practises. After seven days of practice, it flowers.

  4. Screenshot: the flower box with five flowers. Gro says “Se så fine blomster du har plantet!” (“Look at the lovely flowers you’ve planted!”)

    The flower is planted

The flower moves into the flower box, and a new seed is ready.

Works on paper too

Not every day needs to be about screens. Print the day’s sheet from the app, and your child practises with a pencil: adding up, reading, tracing letters and telling the time.

The sheet has the same tasks as the app, at your child’s level. Afterwards you enter the answers in the app, and when everything is right, your child gets to water the plant.

Printed sheet “Hva er klokka?” (“What time is it?”) with six clock faces, where your child circles the right time. Printed sheet “Skriv og spor” (“Write and trace”) with faint letters your child traces with a pencil, and the name Ella. Printed sheet “Pluss” (“Addition”) with twelve small sums, dots to count and a box for the answer.

Numbers, letters, reading and the clock

The tasks change from day to day. The app keeps track of what your child has mastered and adjusts the level, so it’s neither too easy nor too hard.

Meet Leif and Gro

Their names work in English too: say Leif like “leaf” and Gro like “grow”.

Gro, a flower with a pink petal hat

Gro is the teacher

She explains the tasks, says whether the answer is right, and cheers when something is hard.

Hi! I’m cheering for you.

Leif, a round green sprout with two leaves on his head

Leif practises alongside your child

He gets things wrong now and then, and cheers when your child gets it right.

Yes, I want to join in!

Questions and answers

Is the app available in English?

No. The website is in English, but the app is only in Norwegian: Gro speaks Norwegian, and the reading, letters and rhymes are Norwegian too. It’s only available in the Norwegian App Store. The tasks themselves are useful for children getting ready for school anywhere, but for now everything in the app is in Norwegian. We’ll bring it to more countries as we translate it.

How old should my child be?

Leif & Gro is made for children in the year before they start school. The level adjusts to what your child has mastered, so the tasks are neither too easy nor too hard.

How long do we practise each day?

About 10–15 minutes a day. The day’s practice is done when the tasks are correct and the plant is watered. Sit together if you can, and stop when it’s no longer fun.

Does my child have to use a screen?

No. You can print the day’s sheet and practise with a pencil. Afterwards you enter the answers in the app, and your child gets to water the plant. Download a sample sheet to see what it looks like.

What happens if we miss a day?

Nothing is lost. The plant only grows on the days you practise. If you miss a day, it droops a little, but it perks up again.

Can we use the app for more than one child?

Yes. The subscription covers the whole family: all the children and both parents. Each child gets their own plant and their own tasks.

How does the other parent join?

You send an invitation from the app. The other parent signs in with Apple and sees the same children, without adding them again.

What do you store about my child?

A nickname you choose, the birth year and the answers to the tasks, so the level can follow your child. No full name, no date of birth and no photos. Your child has no account of their own, and there are no ads and no tracking. You can download or delete everything yourself in the app. Read the privacy policy.

How do I cancel?

The subscription is bought in the App Store, and you cancel it there whenever you like.

Is Leif & Gro available on Android?

No. Leif & Gro is for iPhone and iPad, and for now only in Norwegian and only in Norway.
